Hi everyone! This week, we’re focusing on the impacts of offshore wind farms in MENA as a potential for clean energy. Enjoy!
Discussions about accelerating global warming and increasing natural disasters place energy systems at the center of changing economies. Many Middle Eastern governments have put together elaborate clean energy plans. One such source of clean energy that has begun to gain traction in the region is offshore wind plants. Startups and established businesses will have plenty of opportunities to cash out on this burgeoning trend.
Offshore wind farms generate power by harnessing the wind to turn massive wind turbines. Each turn generates power. This source of energy is far cleaner and more renewable than fossil fuels, which contribute to the warming climate and are costly in many aspects.
However, wind farms have historically been developed in Europe and China, with very small yet nascent markets in MENA and the US. By 2025, the wind energy market is expected to jump to $17.8 billion. In MENA, the Gulf is the main area in which offshore wind farms are being developed.
Reports suggest that wind energy could produce up to 11,000 new jobs in the Gulf by 2030. The biggest proposed project is one in Saudi Arabia. The Dumat al Jamal location is the first wind farm in the Kingdom – it went into service last August. This site will have a capacity of 400 megawatts and will be able to power 70,000 homes.
The UAE also has included wind energy as a part of its Energy Strategy 2050. The country has built its first turbine at Sir Bani Yas Island. The plant has a production of 850 kilowatts per hour. And in Egypt, government officials have announced a plan for 14% wind-powered energy by 2035.
To be sure, offshore wind farms provide an interesting opportunity for innovative investors and founders alike to start a new revolution in clean energy.
